How to Setting an Access Point

How to set an access point on the TP Link AP below:

  1. First, we have to prepare an AP with an antenna, power cable, LAN cable on the AP and connect it to the computer with a LAN cable.
  2. Next, set the IP address in Control Panel> Network Connection, then double-click the Local Area Connection icon> Internet Protocol TCP / IP> Properties> Use the Following IP Address.
  3. Fill in the IP address as needed, for example IP address: 192.168.1.2, Subnet mask: 225.255.255.0, and enter Preferred DNS server: 192.168.1.254> OK.
  4. To check the connection you can use the command Start> Run> type cmd> press enter. At the command prompt you can call the computer’s IP address by typing: ping 192.168.1.2> press Enter.
  5. After that you can see the IP address at the bottom of the AP device at the command prompt, then ping it again by typing ping 192.168.1.254> enter.
  6. Next, do the AP settings by opening a browser and typing the IP address of the AP that was previously determined> enter.
  7. Enter username = admin, then Password = admin> enter.
  8. Then configure it on the AP page. 
  9. Then enter the Network tab menu then standard settings> Save.
  10. Then go to the Wireless tab, set the SSID, Region, Channel, and the following mode for example:

SSID name: Access point 1

Region: Indonesia

Channel: Automatic

Mode: 54Mbps (802.11g)

Click Save

  1. Then enter Wireless mode> access point> checklist enable SSID Broadcast> Save.
  2. Finally, we enter the DHCP menu> select Enable> click Save.

How the Access Point Works The

The way this AP works is actually not difficult to understand, but we need to know the following simple or technical. 

This AP is a gateway which connects wireless devices on the local network. This access point functions by providing a connection between the RF signal data path formed by wifi, and the electrical data path created by the LAN cable.

In addition, the access point can also manage access, data encryption, fault tolerance, and network management.

If there is a user connected to the AP, the AP will determine whether or not the device is allowed to connect to the network.

To perform this setting, the AP will use its security features such as encrypting passwords, checking the compatibility of the password on the AP with the device to connect.

How to Connect a Router to an Access Point.

To connect the router to the AP, it’s quite easy, see the steps below. 

  1. Open the Winbox application first to remote to the router.
  2. In Winbox, delete the manufacturer’s configuration, then enter the System menu> Reset Configuration> No Defaults Configuration> Reset Configuration. 
  3. Activate the wireless interface by going to the Wireless menu> Clicking wlan1> clicking the “tick” icon.
  4. Double click on the wlan1> click wireless to find the access point then click Scan.
  5. Press the Start button and the Access point will be found. Then click wifi which will be connected to the router by clicking Connect
  6. Enter the password from wifi by going to the Wireless table> Security Profile tab. Create a name as desired then enter the password on the Pre-Shared Key menu> OK.
  7. Enter the wlan1 interface again and change the security profile from the default to the one we created earlier> Apply> OK.
  8. If successful, the letter “R” will appear in front of wlan1.
  9. If you are connected to the Access point, you can enter the IP> DHCP Client> “+” menu, to get the IP from the DHCP Client.
  10. If you have obtained the IP from the DHCP Client, you can connect to the internet. 

Difference between Access Point and Router

The main difference between an access points nds and a router lies in the Firewall (NAT) function in addition to the security features.

How to Connect 2 Access Points Without Wires

To connect 2 access points without cables, we will use TP Link: 

Turn on both access points.  

Main Settings:

  1. Connect to the main AP network.
  2. Then open the browser, open and log in using the username and password which you can see under the TP Link AP tool.
  3. On the Network> DHCP Server menu, make sure the IP address and End IP address are between 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.254.
  4. On the Network> LAN menu, note the LAN IP address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.

Second setting:

  1. Connect the network to the main AP.
  2. Open the browser, login to the address or , enter the username and password that is under the AP device.
  3. On the Wireless> wireless settings menu, set the SSID with the name up to you, then you can set the password in the Wireless Security menu.
  4. Check the Enable WDS (Enable WDS bridging) option.
  5. Press Scan / Search, then all the SSIDs detected by the AP will appear. Select SSD from Main Wifi and note the Channel number from the SSID> Connect.
  6. SSID (to be bridged) will automatically change the SSID name according to the main AP. Then fill in the Channel, Key Type, Encryption Type, and password for the main WiFi router> Save.
  7. Select Disable DHCP Server on the Networks> DHCP> Save menu.
  8. In the Network> LAN menu, change the LAN IP address to make it different from the main AP, try to select an IP outside the main AP IP address range> Save.
  9. If the connection is lost you don’t need to worry, this is usually the case when an IP change occurs. About 1-2 minutes then access 192.168.0.2 while still connected to the second WiFi network, on the System Tools menu> Reboot.
  10. If the AP is back on and able to connect to the internet, the process is complete.
