Understanding Cloud Service
Cloud Service is a variety of services provided on demand to companies and users via the internet. These services are designed to provide easy and affordable access to applications and resources, without the need to build an internal infrastructure. Without realizing it, we and most of our employees use this service all day long, from checking email to collaborating on documents.
What are the Cloud Service Models?
Then, is there only one type of cloud service? Certainly not. In general, cloud service can be divided into 3 models:
- Software as a Service (SaaS)
This is the type of cloud service that is most widely known. SaaS is software that is used as an online service, or in short, it is called a cloud application service. Saas utilizes the internet to be able to run applications managed by service providers. When using this SaaS service model, we don’t need to worry about how to do application maintenance because everything has been done by the service provider. Some examples of SaaS model cloud service providers are Dropbox, G Suite, Microsoft Office 365, and Slack.
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS is a type of model cloud service which is basically a physical server and a virtual server. IaaS service providers provide resources such as data centers, storage, and networks. IaaS is a service that allows users to use the server without the need to buy computers and other physical equipment, perform routine maintenance, and even without configuring the device. Some examples of IaaS model cloud service providers are Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Compute Engine.
- Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Platform as a Service or PaaS is a cloud service provided in the form of a platform and can be used by users to create applications. PaaS provides a framework for developers that they can build and use to build applications. When using the PaaS service, all data centers, storage and networks are managed by the company or service provider, while the developers only manage the application management themselves.
What are the Benefits of Cloud Service?
Although there are many the benefits of using cloud services, here are 4 main benefits of using cloud services, including:
- High Scalability
Because the overall infrastructure & software required has been provided by the service provider, companies do not need to invest in their own resources or allocate specialized IT staff to manage the service.
- More Cost Efficient
We all know that building our own infrastructure such as providing servers, investing in hardware & software, electricity costs, providing air conditioning that works 24 hours 7 days a week, security costs and others, of course, requires a lot of money. By migrating to the cloud, companies can eliminate them and replace them at a more controllable cost each month.
- Flexibility Increases
Efficiency at this cost is accompanied by flexibility in the company. How come? By moving to cloud services, companies can customize services according to their needs. When there is no longer a need to use a particular application or platform, the company can easily cancel or disable the service.
- Secured Security
Many cloud providers offer a range of policies, technologies, and controls that are useful for strengthening the security of data, applications, and infrastructure from potential threats. Moreover, the existence of Cloud backup provides security for data to always be accessed from anywhere and anytime, so that when something untoward happens, such as a loss of a laptop or a natural disaster, the impact can be minimized, and all the files needed can still be accessed.
Features of a Successful Cloud Migration
To find out how successful a cloud migration is, a company must first know where its business is going. If the primary goal is to increase the efficiency and resilience of IT systems, companies know they can realize significant cost savings by deploying new architectures or applications in the cloud.
The second main objective is to enable businesses to discover new things and do them quickly. So, this is where innovation, experimentation, and business agility using the cloud will stand out. The result is that companies remain thrifty, but can move nimbly. This is where the evidence of the success of the cloud migration appears. Before you decide to migrate to the cloud, it’s good to increase your knowledge about migration and cloud migration steps for success.
