How to Setup Router at home
Think of routers as air traffic controllers and data packets as planes heading to different airports (or networks). Just as each plane has a unique destination and follows a unique route, each packet needs to be guided to its destination as efficiently as possible.
In the same way that air traffic controllers ensure that planes reach their destinations without getting lost or experiencing major disturbances along the way, routers help route data packets to their destination IP addresses.
To be able to do this, the router must be set to do its job properly. How to set it? The method is quite easy. Let’s discuss below:
Connect Modem with Router
The first way is to connect the modem to the router. Don’t plug your router into a power outlet just yet. Instead, the first thing you’ll do is connect your modem to the WAN port with an Ethernet cable.
- Step 1: Not sure what the WAN port is? Most consumer routers have a group of Ethernet ports, some of which are called LAN (local area network) ports and others called WAN (wide area network) ports.
WAN ports look the same as LAN ports, but are often different colors and spaced apart. In the photo above, for example, the WAN port is yellow and labeled Internet. Sometimes it will be labeled WAN. This port is meant to connect your router to your modem and the outside world from there. The LAN port is designed for connecting to local devices.
- Step 2: Plug one Ethernet cable into your modem and the other end into your router’s WAN port. Then, plug your router’s power adapter into the wall.

- Step 1: WPA2 encryption is currently the security standard, and you should always select it if given an option for your security protocol. Make sure you also choose a long password, which is different from the admin password you previously set.
- Step 2: However, the used router may already have a password and will need to be reset. Most routers have a hidden reset button on the back. Holding down the Reset button with a paperclip for at least 30 seconds should work. Leave the power on, and wait for the router to rest.
It should use the default settings when it restarts, which means the default username and password will now give you access to the settings.

Perform Cable Installation
