Understanding Google Cloud Platform

Google Cloud Platform

The need for cloud computing is currently on the rise where many companies are starting to switch to cloud platforms. There is one of the largest IT companies in the world that also provides this cloud service called Google Cloud Platform.

What is Google Cloud Platform? Google Cloud Platform is a public Cloud Computing service offered by Google. This platform provides a variety of hosting services for compute, storage, and development of applications that run on Google hardware. In addition, the Google Cloud Platform can be accessed by software developers, Cloud administrators and other corporate IT professionals via the public internet or through a dedicated network connection.

Overview of Google Cloud Platform

The Google Cloud Platform provides services based on compute, storage, networking, big data, machine learning and the internet of things (IoT), and also provides cloud management, security and developer tools.

The core Cloud Computing products of the Google Cloud Platform are as follows:

  • Google App Engine, is a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) service that can provide software developers with access to scalable Google hosting. Developers are also facilitated in developing App Engine software to develop SDK software products.
  • Google Compute Engine, is an infrastructure-as-service (IaaS) service that provides users with virtual machine instances for hosting workloads.
  • Cloud SQL, a software that can be used for full relational storage using MySQL, and Google’s original Cloud Bigtable database.
  • Google Cloud Storage, is a Cloud storage area that is designed to be able to store large and unstructured data. In addition, Google also offers database storage options such as Cloud Datastore for NoSQL nonrelational storage.
  • Google Container Engine, is a management and orchestration system for Docker containers running in Google’s public cloud. The Google container Engine is a container orchestration engine based on Google Kubernetes.
  • Google Cloud Platform which offers application development and integration services. An example of a product is Google cloud pub / sub, a managed realtime ordering service that allows message exchange between applications. In addition, Google Cloud Endpoints allows developers to create services based on RESTful API software, so they can make these services accessible to Apple IOS, Android, and Javascript clients. And there are also other offerings such as Anycast DNS servers, direct network interconnection, load balancing, monitoring and logging services.

Higher Google Services

Google continues to upgrade higher levels of services, such as those related to big data and machine learning, to its cloud platform. This large data service from Google can process and analyze data well such as using Google BigQuery for queries such as SQL which are made against multi-terabyte data sets.

There is also the Google Cloud Dataflow service, which is a data processing service intended for analytics, extracting, editing and loading (ETL), and realtime computing projects. The platform also includes Google Cloud Dataproc, which also offers Apache Spark and Hadoop for greater data processing.

In terms of artificial intelligence or AI, Google also has a service, namely the Cloud Machine Learning Engine. Cloud Machine Learning Engine is a service that allows users to create and train a more centralized learning model. Various APIs are also available for translation and analysis of speech, text, images and video.

Google also provides services for the Internet of Things, namely Google Cloud IoT Core, which is a managed service for users to consume and manage data from IoT devices.

The range of Google Cloud Platform services will continue to grow and Google also regularly introduces, changes, or discontinues services based on user demand or competitive pressures in the IT world. The main competitor in the Cloud Computing market is quite tough, namely having to deal with big competitors such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

Google Cloud Platform Pricing Options

Like other public cloud offerings, the majority of Google Cloud Platform services follow a pay-as-you-go model which means there are no down payments at all so users will only discuss the cloud resources they will use. But specific terms and rates differ from service to service.

Google Cloud Platform Certification

Google offers training programs and certifications related to the services, such as programs for cloud infrastructure, data and machine learning, application development and G suite administration, as well as introductory programs for its cloud platforms.

There are 3 types of certifications that an IT professional will obtain, namely a Certified Professional Cloud Architect, a Certified Professional Data Engineer, and a Certified Professional G Suite Administrator.

Google Cloud Platform Indonesia

After succeeding in the world of platform, Google is currently also starting to penetrate the Google cloud platform Indonesia market which is quite promising. From global services, fairly balanced loads, to flexible VMs, Google Cloud Platform provides additional cloud computing options that can suit your needs.

The Google compute engine also provides a virtual machine that can be modified as needed with the best features, provides the option to spread your coding quickly or across content, and most importantly at a fairly friendly price.

Google Kubernetes Engine is also one of the services that you can use to fully manage to deploy, manage, and customize containers on a large scale.

Google App Engine is a platform-as-a-service platform that allows you to focus on your coding, skipping you from the operational details of deployment and infrastructure management.

Google Cloud Platform Jakarta

After entering Indonesia, Google Cloud Platform has also been officially released and starts operating in Jakarta. Designed to support customers in Indonesia as well as other users, it is absolutely true that the capital city of Jakarta is Google’s first GCP region in Indonesia and is also one of the 9 in Asia-Pacific (APAC).

According to him, with lower latency in accessing data and applications, companies doing business in Indonesia can accelerate their digital transformation and be more optimal.

With the presence of the Google Cloud Platform Jakarta region, Director of Digital, Information Technology and Operations of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. Indra Utoyo said that Google Cloud has supported the company in implementing a digital banking strategy in order to increase financial inclusion and to serve the banking needs of the Indonesian people.

He said that currently, we are using Apigee, Google Maps Platform API, and Cloud Vision for product development. With their hybrid, on-cloud and on-premise approaches, both Google and BRI place data security at the highest priority. The launch of the Google Cloud Region in Jakarta reinforces Google’s principles and will sustain us in better reaching our customers.

Currently, PT Axiata Tbk has a target to transfer 70% of its workload to the cloud within the next 3 years. Axiata adopts Anthos to automate, manage, and scale workloads in its hybrid / multi-cloud environment in a safe and more consistent manner.

Indra Utoyo also said that the Google Cloud Platform will help customers meet certain regulatory and compliance requirements, and will also provide more disaster recovery options for its customers in Asia-Pacific.

Also he adds from the start that this region is designed to have three cloud zones so that it can handle workloads more optimally and provide a higher level of availability. With the presence of the Jakarta region, the Google cloud currently totals 24 regions and 73 zones in 17 countries around the world.

Yessie D Yosetya, Chief Information plus Digital Officer of XL Axiata said that XL Axiata is committed to modernizing XL Axiata’s infrastructure in order to increase business flexibility and accelerate application deployment. Anthos is ideal for XL Axiata, enabling XL Axiata to adopt containers while enabling Google, the leader in Kubernetes technology, to manage container infrastructure for XL Axiata.

Apart from the launch of the Google Cloud Platform in the Jakarta region, there are also several facilities that Google offers such as Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, Cloud Spanner, Cloud Bigtable, and BigQuery.

Developers, information engineers and information scientists can also use ML (machine learning) and AI (artificial intelligence) programs from Google to be used in their projects from idea to deployment quickly and also cost-effectively. Hybrid cloud customers can integrate new and existing deployments with multiple ecosystem protections for local partners.

Those are some of our reviews about what Google Cloud Platform is and what are its benefits for the cloud computing market in Indonesia, hopefully it will be useful.
